“Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4
I meditated on this thought all day yesterday. Wow. I didn’t realize how often I act selfishly until I thought about “do nothing from selfishness.” How often do we get mad when something doesn’t go our way? How often do we let our husbands know when they make a decision that we aren’t happy with? What would change if we meditated on this thought every day?
Being humble doesn’t mean thinking I am stupid. It means having a true perspective about myself, and that being that I would be nothing without God. I have nothing without Him. And He gave everything for me. If I am looking out only for me then I am not being like Christ (see Philippians 2:5-8). It is a powerful example for us to follow, but God doesn’t suggest it, He commands it. His goal is to make us more like Him, and that means not being selfish. Ever. The next phrase finishes that thought even more: “regard one another as more important than yourselves.” You are more important than me. I need to step back and put your needs first.
I asked earlier what would happen if we meditated on this every day? Well, if all Christians (“little Christ”) meditated and lived out this idea everyday maybe we would reach more people. Maybe God would use us to impact more lives.
“Do nothing from selfishness.”
Hmmm…
